  • Report That Alcohol Is Not Heart Healthy For Most People Requires Re-think

November 14, 2014: by Bill Sardi

Reporting in the journal ALCOHOL, researchers at the University of Gothenberg incorrectly conclude that alcohol and red wine offers little benefit to healthy people seeking to keep their hearts healthy. Their study measured reduction of HDL cholesterol and presumed reduction of coronary heart disease. [Alcohol Nov. 2014] A news headline says: “Bad News For People Who Think Alcohol Is Healthy.”   [Huffington Post Nov 13, 32014] But the conclusion of their study should have been that HDL cholesterol, not alcohol, has little effect on coronary heart disease.

  • The Bad, The Ugly And The Good: If Pre-Natal Exposure To Chemicals Causes Some Cases Of Autism, Will Resveratrol Reverse It?

October 5, 2014: by Bill Sardi

Researchers now recognize that autism involves modifiable genetic factors in the brain.  In the proposed therapy genes are not structurally altered but their ability to make proteins (called gene expression) is modified by use of vitamins and other small molecules.  It may be possible to molecularly reverse autism.  [Epigenomics June 2011]

Only a small fraction of autistic children exhibit gene mutations (structural problems in the DNA ladder).  Early environmental exposure to chemicals is strongly suspected as causal.  Children today are surrounded by thousands of synthetic chemicals. Two hundred of them are neurotoxic in adult humans, and 1000 more in laboratory models. [Current Opinion Pediatrics April 2010]

Researchers even postulate that seemingly innocuous chemicals in perfumes need to be investigated to see if there is any association with autism since chemicals in perfumes are expected to reach the developing fetal brain.  [Medical Hypotheses June 2013]

  • Cancer Cured, Again

September 30, 2014: by Bill Sardi

Oh no, not another cure for cancer. It’s not another laetrile is it?

It was April Fools’ Day 2007 and an op-ed article published by The New York Times entitled “Patents Over Patients” by Ralph Moss, noted critic of the cancer industry. But there was no fooling about what Mr. Moss wrote about. He chastised the cancer industry for ignoring an off-the-shelf molecule initially produced in the 1940s called 3-bromopyruvate (3-BP) that had been found to dramatically reduce the growth of human tumors implanted in animals and has produced remarkable cures in a small number of human cases but had yet to be tested in a human trial. That was seven years ago. The initial animal lab discovery was published in 2004. That was 10 years ago.

  • In An Era Of Anti-Aging Pills Will The Next Generation Of Humans Come With An Expiration Date?

September 24, 2014: by Bill Sardi

Set your sights on living 75 productive years and then lay down your baton, refuse any further medical interventions and await the day they are going to etch on you tombstone. That is what one of the advisors to Obamacare now suggests.

His name is Dr. Ezekiel Emanuel who says he doesn’t force his opinion on others who want to live longer than that. He just says he thinks life is definitely on a downhill slope after 75 years and there isn’t much left to accomplish except to witness your own mental and physical decline.

Dr. Emanuel’s position statement can be found at The Atlantic online. [The Atlantic Sept 17, 2014] Dr. Emanuel is 57, his parents are in their 80s.

  • The natural antidote to high-fructose corn syrup (this doesn’t mean you can consume this sugar without consequences though)

    September 23, 2014: by ResveratrolNews

European Journal Nutrition 2014 Sep 11. [Epub ahead of print]

High-fructose corn syrup-induced hepatic dysfunction in rats: improving effect of resveratrol.

    Abstract

    PURPOSE:

The increased consumption of high-fructose corn syrup (HFCS) may contribute to the worldwide epidemic of fatty liver. In this study, we have investigated whether HFCS intake (20 % beverages) influences lipid synthesis and accumulation in conjunction with insulin receptor substrate-1/2 (IRS-1; IRS-2), endothelial nitric oxide synthase (eNOS), sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) and inducible NOS (iNOS) gene expressions in liver of rats. Resveratrol was tested for its potential efficacy on changes induced by HFCS.

  • Special Report: Antioxidants & Zinc For Macular Degeneration

September 17, 2014: by Bill Sardi

    FOR
    BETTER
    OR WORSE?
    ANTIOXIDANTS
    & ZINC FOR
    MACULAR
    DEGENERATION

A disturbing study in the journal Ophthalmology, a publication of the American Academy of Ophthalmology, is likely to turn attempts to prevent and treat macular degeneration with dietary supplements upside down. The report is likely to cause dismay and confusion among patients with the disease who have been faithfully taking mineral or antioxidant formulas to delay visual decline. [Ophthalmology Sept 4, 2014]

  • Healthy longevity is within reach say biologists but they (again) stop short of making any practical recommendations

September 12, 2014: by Bill Sardi

Hold your breath one more time before we put any new discovery into practice that could dramatically increase the human healthspan and lifespan. The latest study shows that activation of a gene that controls cell energy in key organs slows aging throughout the body and increases the lifespan of fruit flies by 30%. [UCLA Newsroom Sept 8, 2014] That is equivalent to adding another 20 healthy years to the human lifespan if this science is applicable to humans (and it is!).

The medical and biological research community is piling up libraries of breakthrough basic research but putting the brakes on applied science. Almost every research paper involving longevity ends with the demand that more research needs to be done before proceeding ahead.   Why not activate the same gene in humans that was activated in fruit flies and figure out all the biological mechanisms later? You can enter the heavenly state of enduring health and longevity but not before the high priests of biology say so. The latest breakthrough in biology is an example.

  • Heart Researchers Call Resveratrol A “Fiasco” And A “Hopeless Illusion”

September 5, 2014: by Bill Sardi

The editor of the journal Pharmacological Research is calling it the “resveratrol fiasco.” [Pharmacological Research Aug 30, 2014] Researchers in Hong Kong are calling resveratrol “a hopeless illusion.” [Pharmacological Research Aug 22, 2013]

Decrying the lack of human research studies, claiming the promised hope of resveratrol has been hiding behind “non-human research as a cover” for back-door marketing of resveratrol dietary supplements, these investigators say resveratrol, the much heralded red wine molecule that is believed to be partly responsible for the French Paradox, “may indeed turn out to be nothing more than a sleight of hand.”
