While more and more adults are living actively into their 8th decade of life and beyond, improvements in survival with advancing age tends to decline after age 100 years. [Nature Oct 5, 2016] Researchers who study aging now say humanity may have reached the outer limits of longevity as the no modern human has lived beyond the age of 122 years, the apparent maximum lifespan. [Daily Mail UK Oct 5, 2016; New York Times Oct 5, 2016]
The Bible says: “Then the LORD said, “My Spirit shall not strive with man forever, because he also is flesh; nevertheless his days shall be one hundred and twenty years.” [Book of Genesis 6:3] So maybe today’s news headlines are not new at all.

Activation of the Sirtuin1 survival gene has been extolled for its epigenetic mimicry of a lifespan-doubling calorie-restricted diet. In 2003 Harvard-based geneticist David Sinclair reported that the red wine molecule resveratrol profoundly activated the Sirtuin1 gene better than other small molecules. The opposite signal, Sirtuin1 gene inhibition, was said to emanate from niacin (aka nicotinic acid), a ubiquitous nutrient in food. So the food/no-food signal inhibits/activates Sirtuin1.

Remember the movie “Ghostbusters” where actors Dan Aykroyd and Bill Murray captured ghosts with magic wands? Well that is the imagined scenario where “Age Busters” burst into nursing homes with fire extinguishers to spray resveratrol everywhere, resulting in many residents breaking free and escaping their drug-induced stupors to live the rest of their lives uninstitutionalized.

Utopia (Latin = “nowhere”; remains imaginary)
Why don’t we have hydrogen-powered automobiles? H-powered cars are not confined to the drawing board. [Car & Driver] The Toyota Mirai is an H-powered auto ready to sell if public demand could be mounted for tax breaks to build hydrogen fueling stations to replace gasoline powered vehicles. California gave a go-ahead for hydrogen fueling stations, but somebody made sure they didn’t work. [Green Car Reports] But the handwriting is on the wall as the Rockefeller family charities, which made its fortunes on investments in oil companies, are withdrawing all investments in fossil fuel companies. With evidence that bacteria and viruses may be causing Alzheimer’s disease, [Science Alert March 2016] the obvious use of antibiotics is now posed as an antidote. [Daily Mail UK July 27, 2016; Scientific Reports July 21, 2016] Other studies also provide confirmation for the use of antibiotics for brain health. [Neurobiology Learning Memory May 2015]

A major review of the scientific evidence surrounding the miracle molecule resveratrol (rez-vair-ah-trol) begs for more studies that already exist, ignores important qualities of this molecule such as “preconditioning” that protects the brain and heart from damage should a stroke or heart attack occur, suggests humanity wait at least another decade before making a decision as to its contribution to health promotion and longevity, and ignores science surrounding the best-tested resveratrol product on the market today (Longevinex®). [Nutrients June 2016]
And that is the kindest of comments that can be made for this recently published report that creates more confusion than it does clarification.

Yes, a bona fide anti-aging pill made the front-page of the New York Times recently. And this time it wasn’t resveratrol.
Researcher Matt Kaeberlein at the University of Washington was shown in a photograph throwing a toy to one of his study subjects – his dog. And that article in the NY Times got trumped by the many, many comments from readers that revealed just how well the public warms up to the idea of an anti-aging pill (not very). In fact, a follow-up story entitled “Many Readers Say No To Idea of Life-Extending Drug, But Yes For Their Pets,” was more revealing.

Is there a phenomenon in biology that can bring back people from the dead? Well, yes, since a person may stop breathing and their heart may stop pumping, but brain or heart muscle damage may not be experienced until later when oxygen supply is restored and toxic oxygen free radicals generated. In medicine this is called reperfusion injury.
In the interim when a subject may appear to be dead, when tissues are totally or partially deprived of oxygen (anoxia or hypoxia), pre-event activation of powerful internal antioxidants may avert heart and brain damage and the patient is revived.
