Alcohol consumption is up 500% in America with lockdown and quarantine measures in place. So is anxiety.
The number of mentally depressed people in the world is estimated to be 300 million. Most likely that number has risen considerably with the COVID-19 lockdowns.
The red wine molecule resveratrol is the ideal multifunctional molecule for anxious, depressed or stressed individuals during an epidemic lockdown.
Resveratrol was recently shown to molecularly reverse internal markers of mental depression among laboratory mice that were restrained in their cages. A report published in Neurochemical Research Jan. 3, 2021 stated the effect was profound.
Resveratrol is an all-in-one molecule for depression, anxiety and loss of memory.
Brain inflammation is involved in anxiety states, which resveratrol has been shown to ameliorate. Resveratrol even provides relief from post-traumatic stress disorder.
Diabetics exhibit increased depression and anxiety, whereas resveratrol normalizes the mental state in diabetic lab animals.
The advantage of these animal studies is that there is no possibility for the placebo effect.
For men, resveratrol has been shown to reverse erectile dysfunction via stimulation of hydrogen sulfide.
For women, the enzyme monoamine oxidase (MAO) induces a mental depressive state in females that is reversed by resveratrol, a natural MAO inhibitor.
Modest dose resveratrol is suggested (no more than 350 mg per day/adults) as it inhibits an enzyme (sulfotransferase) that keeps a lid on stress hormones. By virtue of resveratrol’s modest inhibition of sulfotransferase it also increases mental alertness. Over-inhibition of sulfotransferase can induce anxiety, so modest doses of resveratrol are recommended (<350 mg/day).
Resveratrol was also recently found to inhibit the replication of the COVID-19 coronavirus in a superior manner to EGCG/green tea. Resveratrol and its molecular cousin quercetin, are considered promising candidates to inhibit COVID-19 coronavirus. With no approved vaccine for coronaviruses in the past decade, resveratrol serves as an alternative to anti-depressant drugs and alcohol consumption during the lockdown era and as an alternative till vaccines are proven safe and effective.
