No, one doesn’t have to be courageous to take resveratrol supplements but researchers report, for the first time, that resveratrol may embolden those who fortify their diet with it.
Researchers have created a fearless super-intelligent mouse in the laboratory by alteration of a single gene. This was accomplished, not by alteration of the structure of a gene or repair of a gene mutation but by epigenetic inhibition of a protein (an enzyme) that is produced by this gene.
Inhibition of phosphodiesterase-4B (PDE-4B) produces clever laboratory mice that are also less likely to feel anxiety or recall fear. For example, these daring mice were less averse to cat urine, a predator that mice normally fear. [Science Daily Aug 14, 2015; Neuropsychopharmacology Aug 14, 2015]
Researchers say they are now actively in pursuit of drugs which inhibit PDE-4B for use in humans trials. Already a class of drugs which inhibit phosphodiesterase-5 (PDE-5) are approved by the Food & Drug Administration for erectile dysfunction and are well known by their brand names – Viagra, Cialis and Levitra.
The red wine molecule resveratrol (rez-vair-ah-trol) is an exceptional PDE-4 inhibitor. [Trends Cellular Biology Oct 2012; Adipocyte Oct 2012] Consumers need not wait for PDE-4 inhibiting drugs. -©2015 Bill Sardi, ResveratrolNews.com
