    In a free market, with an un-manipulated news media and a medical establishment open to less problematic and more economical cures, the announcement today by Dr. Stuart Richer OD, PhD, Director of Ocular Preventive Medicine at the Eye Clinic, James A Lovell Federal Health Care Center – North Chicago, would have been splashed on the front page of newspapers throughout the world.

    The public would have stood in fascination at the prospect of damaged tissues in their brain, heart or eyes simultaneously repaired without invasive techniques.  The idea of not having to wait decades to apply this discovery would have caused telephone lines across the world to become overloaded.  But that is not the world we live in today.

  • Resveratrol Pills: The Year 2012 In Review

    For the uninitiated: resveratrol (rez-vair-ah-trol) is known as a red wine molecule that is that is believed to be chiefly, but not solely, responsible for the heart-healthy effects of red wine.

    The year 2012 started out with maybe half of all resveratrol pill users abandoning their use after hearing allegations that the leading researcher in the field had committed scientific fraud. The researcher, Dipak Das PhD, working at the University of Connecticut (U CONN), was alleged to have fabricated data to gain research grant money and according to radio talk show host Rush Limbaugh, Dr. Das “made it all up” (the science that is).

    While over 350 news sources covered the story, they were simply parroting allegations made by a 5-man U CONN review board, a board that concedes it never read the university’s 60,000 page evidence report and could not produce for Dr. Das’ legal counsel the original evidence disc which it said was lost. In fact, U CONN never gave Dr. Das due process and took its website offline when it was challenged to validate various facts that were egregiously inaccurate. But the damage had been done.

  • Scientists in Hong Kong map initial anti-aging formula

    (Reuters) – Scientists in Hong Kong appear to have mapped out a formula that can delay the aging process in mice, a discovery they hope to replicate in people.

    Their finding, published in the December issue of Cell Metabolism, builds on their work in 2005 which shed light on premature aging, or progeria, a rare genetic disease that affects one in four million babies.

    Progeria is obvious in the appearance of a child before it is a year old. Although their mental faculties are normal, they stop growing, lose body fat and suffer from wrinkled skin and hair loss. Like old people, they suffer stiff joints and a buildup of plaque in arteries which can lead to heart disease and stroke. Most die before they are 20 years old.

    In that research, the team at the University of Hong Kong found that a mutation in the Lamin A protein, which lines the nucleus in human cells, disrupted the repair process in cells, thus resulting in accelerated aging.

  • Modern Medicine Must Side-Step Resveratrol In Order To Introduce Newly Touted Multi-Gene Targeted Drugs

    Researchers have just begun to address the idea of developing multiple-gene targeted drugs for multiple-gene targeted diseases.  Single-gene targeted drugs, like Herceptin, Iressa and Erbitux have been met with disappointment.  A discussion regarding the development of such drugs is published in a recently published edition of Expert Opinion in Drug Discovery.

    The ability of these drugs to avoid polypharmacy (when too many forms of medication are used by a patient) is a desired secondary objective.

    But in saying that, multiple-gene targeted drugs are also anathema to pharmaceutical companies that have been financially built on the false premise of one drug for each disease.

    While these researchers suggest modern pharmacology switch direction and develop multi-gene targeted drugs, for now, modern medicine is dragging its feet over this idea.

  • Stem-Cell Technology, Resveratrol & The Medical Mafia

    Stem-Cell Technology Fascinates, Resveratrol Therapy Is Ignored.  What Goes Here?

    Stem cell technology continues to fascinate researchers and technology-driven males.  Anything that is even alleged to facilitate stem cells becomes wildly popular overnight.  Stem cells, if you recall, are those native unspecialized cells that can turn into heart, brain, muscle and nerve cells.  Stem cells are required for tissue repair.  They have great application for renewal of brain, eye and heart cells that have a very slow cell turnover rate (replace themselves only every few years!).  Once damaged, these are the most difficult tissues to repair.

    Matt Ridley, Wall Street Journal writer, says from the top of his recent article on this subject that “the chief medical ambition of those who study stem cells has always been that the cells would be used to repair and regenerate damaged tissue.”  Well, yes, but the added requirement that any developed stem cell technology would reap a huge profit for its inventors.  Of course, that might run in the wrong direction of healthcare reform, which is to find new ways to treat patients at less cost.

  • Have You Got $181 Billion And Another Ten Years To Wait For This Alzheimer’s Cure?

    Researchers in Berlin, Germany claim the blockage of an immune system transmitter may prevent symptoms of Alzheimer’s disease by reduction of brain plaque known as beta amyloid and suggest Alzheimer’s sufferers wait while they test an existing FDA-approved drug that may even reverse existing disease.  A research study published in Nature Medicine says blockade of a gene target known as p40 was found to reduce beta amyloid brain plaque by 65% in laboratory mice. Striking hemispheric images of the brain of mice are presented at Science Daily to demonstrate the potential beneficial effect of p40 blockade.

    The existing p40-blocking drug, Stelar (ustekinumab), is a monoclonal-antibody that seeks out the cell receptor for p40 and blocks accessibility of immune system activators known as interleukins.  It is currently used to treat psoriasis, a chronic skin condition.

  • Resveratrol Dietary Supplements Fail To Meet Labeled Values

    Researchers in Italy analyzed 14 brands of resveratrol pills and found only 5 that met their labeled value for dosage.  The brands were not identified.

    The difference between the labeled and actual dose may be attributed to degradation of the molecule.  The active form of this molecule (trans resveratrol), degrades to its less active form (cis resveratrol) upon exposure to light.  Heat and oxygen (oxidation) can also degrade resveratrol.  Light exposure actually “isomerizes” resveratrol into a different molecule — trans to cis.

    Indeed, the researchers tested for cis resveratrol and found it was prevalent in many of the mislabeled brands, which suggests the product may have been exposed to environmental factors during extraction from a botanical source, during manufacturing, or possibly during shipping of shelf storage.

  • Poorly Designed Resveratrol Study

    Comment:  Yet another poorly designed study that one might think was intended to kibosh resveratrol.  How does resveratrol improve normal?  If it worked (lowered blood sugar) it would have created hypoglycemia.  Resveratrol works synergistically in red wine in tandem with others molecules such as quercetin and ferulic acid.  Hence, a so-called red wine pill should attempt to provide an array of small molecules.  The hormesis effect where a low dose biological stressor triggers the body to produce internal antioxidants is not considered here.  Consider this study with a grain of salt.  Resveratrol has already been demonstrated to produce health benefits in humans.  – Bill Sardi, ResveratrolNews.com

  • Researchers Discover The Lean Body Hormone That Dramatically Prolongs Life Of Laboratory Animals, But A Drawback Keeps It From Becoming An Anti-Aging Agent. But There Are Shortcuts.

    Since its initial discovery in 2000 by researchers in Japan, the hormone known as fibroblast growth factor-21 (FGF21) has intrigued biologists and endocrinologists. Mouse FGF21 is highly identical to human FGF21, making it useful for laboratory comparison.

    It didn’t take long for investigators to realize FGF21 is a “novel therapeutic agent for human metabolism” in the regulation of sugar utilization, particularly in fat cells (adipocytes) in the liver. Therapeutic provision of FGF21 to laboratory mice reduces blood sugar levels and these animals are resistant to obesity. And FGF21 does not induce hypoglycemia (low blood sugar), cancer or weight gain at any tested dose in diabetic or healthy animals. Biologists were beginning to think of it as an ideal hormone/drug to treat diabetes.
